Job Description: HRYC Program Assistant

Position Type: Contract, 28 hours per week (0.7 full time)
Salary: $22 per hour starting wage
Contract Duration: 12 weeks for a total of 360 hours worked
Reports To: Program Coordinator or Executive Director
Location: Hay River Youth Centre, 906 Mackenzie Hwy, Hay River
Job Summary:
The Hay River Youth Centre is seeking an energetic, creative, and responsible individual to join our team as a Program Assistant. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys working with youth in a fun, inclusive, and dynamic environment. The Summer Program Assistant will support the planning and delivery of daily programs, activities, and special events that promote recreation, skill-building, and positive youth engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in planning and delivering recreational, educational, and cultural programming for youth aged 12–18.
Supervise youth during daily drop-in hours and organized activities, ensuring a safe and welcoming space for all.
Support the coordination of special events, outings, and workshops.
Help with set-up, clean-up, and general upkeep of the Centre and program areas.
Encourage positive behavior and act as a role model for youth participants.
Maintain attendance records and provide input into program evaluations.
Communicate effectively with other staff, volunteers, youth, and families.
Attend occasional evening or weekend events or meetings, as required.
Follow all organizational policies and procedures, including those related to safety and confidentiality.
Experience working or volunteering with youth or in community settings is an asset.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Creative, reliable, and able to take initiative.
Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
Ability to plan and lead games, crafts, or activities is an asset.
Current First Aid/CPR and a valid Vulnerable Sector Check (or willingness to obtain).
Must be 16-30 years of age as of July 1, 2025 (to comply with requirements of Students Commission of Canada Art of Work Program)
Terms of Employment:
Wage: $22 per hour
Hours: 28 hours per week. Regular work hours will be 10:00am to 6:00pm, Tuesday to Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends as required
Overtime: If employee works more than 7.5 hours in a day, or more than 37.5 hours per week, overtime will be paid at a rate of 1.5 times the regular hourly rate
Contract End Date: 12 weeks after date first worked
Supervisor: Reports to the Program Coordinator or Executive Director
Probation Period: This position is subject to a probationary period of 30 days from the starting date of this contract
Benefits: This is a contract position and does not include health, dental, or other traditional benefits
Annual Leave: Vacation will be paid out at the end of each pay period at a rate of 4% of hours worked within that period. No vacation hours will be accrued during the duration of this contract. Unpaid leave may be approved at the discretion of the Executive Director
